In a dramatic bid to capture a dominant share of the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, Tesla has announced a massive price cut of up to ₹9 lakh on its popular Model Y crossover, signaling an aggressive push to spur local consumer demand.
The American EV giant has introduced a new entry-level variant, the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), at a highly competitive ex-showroom price of ₹50.89 lakh. This directly replaces the previous base RWD variant which was priced at ₹59.89 lakh.
Strategic Portfolio Realignment
This significant price adjustment is accompanied by a major restructuring of Tesla’s lineup in India:
- The ₹9 Lakh Drop: By pricing the new Model Y Premium RWD at ₹50.89 lakh, Tesla has made its luxury crossover accessible to a much wider pool of premium car buyers.
- Discontinuation of Long Range RWD: The mid-tier Long Range RWD variant, previously listed at ₹67.89 lakh, has been discontinued to streamline customer options and factory logistics.
Targeting the Premium EV Market in India
Tesla’s aggressive price reduction comes at a time when the Indian luxury EV space is heating up with offerings from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and local major players like Tata Motors and Mahindra expanding their portfolios.
With this new pricing structure, the Model Y Premium RWD offers high-quality tech features:
- Full Premium Suite: Includes premium audio systems, a panoramic glass roof, and advanced Autopilot safety integrations.
- Competitive Range & Speed: Delivers high range and acceleration numbers that stand as benchmarks in the ₹50-60 lakh price bracket.
By bringing the Model Y closer to the ₹50 lakh threshold, Tesla is clearly preparing for high-volume sales, capitalizing on India’s rapidly growing charging infrastructure and expanding appetite for sustainable luxury travel.
